JLDBD Child Abuse or Neglect

POLICY ON CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT

Definition

"Abuse" or "Neglect" means a threat to a child's health or welfare by physical, mental, or emotional injury or impairment, sexual abuse or exploitation, deprivation of essential needs or lack of protection from these, by a person responsible for the child.

Procedure

  1. Any employee of the Veazie School Department, including teachers, administrators, guidance personnel, nurses and educational support staff, who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that a child has been, or is likely to be abused or neglected shall immediately report or cause a report to be made to the Department of Human Services.  If the abuse or neglect is the result of the actions of a person not responsible for the child--i.e., non-parent, the employee shall report or cause a report to be made to the Penobscot County District Attorney's Office immediately following communication with the Department of Human Services.
  2. The reporting employee is expected to notify his/her supervisor or building administrator.
